Alex Mackay is a composer and multimedia artist based in Glasgow, making work across media including sound/music, image and performance for a wide range of contexts, including recorded media, installation, live performance as well as collaborative work in the fields of visual art, dance and film.

He has recently worked with companies such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Red Note, Magnetic North and Touch.

He believes in sound and media as a tool for social change and activism, as a way of highlighting matters of importance to the wider public in ways which are both exciting and engaging. He believes in the positive potential of new technology to lead us towards a more sustainable way of living in working, compatible with our natural surroundings if harnessed in the right way. He endeavours to make work where these ideas are embedded in the process and evident in the product.

He is one half of experimental dance and music unit The Cloud of Unknowing, plays electric guitar and keyboards for Mogwai‘s live shows, and studied composition with Dr Gordon McPherson and Dr Alistair MacDonald at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours of the First Class in 2016.
